Problems with Weather Station At The Deer Trail School 2007.
When the school put on a new roof, they didn't?t want the weather station back up on the roof with the vane, that why I (Ron Schaffer) volunteered to move it to my house in Deer Trail, spring of 2008.
I know that The Dallas 1-wire station was used at the Deer Trail School that had problems with the Computer as I think it was a refurbish Compaq Computers with Windows XP installed.
Ron's Weather Station other Link: http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?DW0573
As long as the Windows Vista & the DSL with the local Phone Company keeps running no problems.

Deer Trail Colorado Weather Station

Randy and I (Russ) went out to Deer Trail on Tuesday July 3 to do some things to the EOSS weather station at the launch site at Deer trail Schools.  We checked in with the front office.  We also met Ron Schaffer who assisted us. The data from the weather station over the past 10 days is shown here.
Sorry, no weather reports for CW0899...

We leveled the wind vane, replaced the temperature/humidity sensor and installed the latest version of the Weather-Display on the computer.  After we did this we were not able to see the wind speed or wind direction sensors.  We reinstalled the older version of the software, but the wind speed and wind direction sensors were not detected.  The temperature and relative humidity sensors were detected and seem to be working normally.
My T238 micro controller unit was able to see all sensors and measured the 1-wire bus voltage at 4.7 volts, which indicated that the bus and the connected sensors are working normally.  This unit interrogates the bus every 5 seconds and indicates when it does not complete 2-way communication with each of the sensors (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and humidity).  We ran a test of about 8 minutes (100 interrogations) and there were no dropped measurements, showing that the weather station 1-wire bus and sensors are all working normally.
Randy was also able to see all 4 of the transducers with his laptop computer.  However, the computer in the Deer Trail Science Room was not able to see the wind speed and wind direction sensors, but was able to see the temperature and relative sensors.  We have let the system run for the past week and as shown above, the behavior has not changed during this time.  The Deer Trail Science Classroom is not air conditioned in the summer and it gets quite warm.  This increased temperature may be causing a computer problem with the COM port, which interrogates the weather station 1-wire bus.
Note that the weather station worked well from Dec 19, 2006 to the first part of June, 2007 It is unlikely that wind speed and direction measurements will be available for the upcoming EOSS balloon launches on July 21st, 2007  If anyone has any suggestions, we would be interested in hearing them.
Russ

Long Story, Cut Short.

Troubles with Wunderground Weather for Deer Trail
Plus tried of playing games with them. Well, after playing game with them, I fanilly did talk to the techs with www.wunderground.com and the reason they had the Deer Trail Weather station done, was they were changing formats. And I like it a lot better than the old.

Today October 2nd, 2009 the one that they had up and running is DOWN again.......!! I wish they get the head out of there bottoms and quit playing games with the Wunderground Weather and keep it running...!
APRSWXNET Kiowa CO US, Agate, Colorado (PWS)They put up other weather stations, but NOT APRSWXNET Deer Trail Weather Dump it again, what a bunch of A-0 tech’s

APRSWXNET Deer Trail CO US, Deer Trail, Colorado (PWS) Now it is running again, but I not going to hold by breath any longer.......haha.  They must have read my A-O tech support which means A-number One......Yeah Right!

The weather data from my house goes out to the Internet and is round-robin, going through all the weather related links to get to different servers and by the time is gets to www.Wunderground.com it takes about 15 minutes or so, to show up on there server.
Ron Schaffer.

The Newer Weather Station is for
Deer Trail Weather Station is NOT temporary any more.

I had the Deer Trail Mrs. Krista Rector Deer Trail School District - 26J High School Business & Computers Middle School Computers Testing Coordinator/Career Counselor School Website:  www.dt26j.org added to the School for the Deer Trail Weather Station. (Weather Station)

I am going to use it from now on, that is.....if they do not delete again. All the information on the weather station is coming from my weather data at home with the Weather Display Software.

In fact, it has more weather related information for everyone to see and view any time they need to.
Thank you. Ron Schaffer

The New Deer Trail Weather Station Is Still NOT Working after 24 hours. So, that means that I do not need the new one on line, the old one is fix and is much better weather station for Deer Trail, Colorado!

Student Involvement As our motto implies, education plays a very important role in EOSS activities. Although each flight is a learning experience for our members, EOSS actively solicits schools to enhance their science and technology curricula with a trip to the Edge of Space.

EOSS has worked with many Colorado schools, from middle schools in Pueblo, Longmont and Aurora through high schools and Colorado Space Grant colleges. We have also worked with other science-oriented youth groups, such as the Lockheed-Martin Explorers, IAAS and STARS. Student experiments have ranged from simple temperature and pressure telemetry to gas sampling and solar telescopes. Many student groups have gained valuable knowledge simply by participating in EOSS launch, telemetry and DF tracking activities.

EOSS members have conducted classroom presentations ranging from short briefings to day-long seminars, and many hours have been devoted to helping students prepare their payloads for launch. EOSS has also provided its well developed operational skills to several organizations engaged in scientific research, including NOAA's Forecast Systems Lab and contractors to JPL's Mars Microballoon Project. In 1993, EOSS hosted the first National Balloon Symposium, bringing together experts from both professional and amateur balloon groups nationwide. More Information: http://eoss.org/

Ron,

The reason we have all of our observers use the same gauge is to ensure we are "comparing apples to apples".  Different types of gauges don't always report the same amounts and when taking measurements for scientific data, consistency and accuracy are most important.  The way to ensure this is to use the same measuring tool.

We have also found that tipping bucket gauges tend to under report the amount of rain when it comes down harder because the tipping cannot keep up with the rain rate.  Also there is usually a lag in snow reporting since the snow has to melt to register the tip.  That is a reason we do not use automated gauges, also because they are more expensive and we want a gauge that the majority or people that sign up can buy.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you,

Zach

The Weather Station that I have in Deer Trail has a modified Rain Gauge that I installed, and reads the moisture at .010 each tip and is very actuate. With that I am using the LaCross Weather Station with Heavy Weather Software going into Weather Display and out to the Internet. Many station are picking up my data and use it on there servers.

EOSS Flight 130 are scheduled for July 26, 2008 with a NOAA weather date using Ron's Weather Station DW0573 of July 26, 2008. Launch time for 8:00 a. m. Launch site will be Deer Trail School grounds in Deer Trail Colorado.
Ron took this video over at the football field, which is about 16 minuts long and a friend of my upladed it to youtube on the Internet. Now, I upload many videos since I don't use webshot, because they only let us upload  only 3 minutes total. This flight is on behalf of the Colorado Space Grant. Ron Schaffer

The weather station that was installed on the roof of Deer Trail School had to be removed when the building was upgraded this winter.  Ron Schaeffer, WD0BDQ, took charge of the removal of the equipment and he stored everything in his garage.  He has also installed a weather station on the roof of his house just across the street from the school.  You can see details of his station and the data here

http://www.wxqa.com/cgi-bin/search1.cgi?keyword=Deer+Trail

Randy has included Ron’s station (DW0573) in the weather analysis that is given here,

http://www-frd.fsl.noaa.gov/mab/sdb/briefdtr.htm

If you click on “predictions” at the upper right of Randy’s web page, you can see predictions of the surface conditions at Deer Trail for times around the balloon launch.  The predictions come from the GFS which is the same model that Randy and Rick use for the trajectory predictions. 6/7/2006  Russ Chadwick Vice President EOSS ~ KB0TVJ Ronschaffer@Deertrailco.net
